A total crap day

Woke up in a panic. Tea and pancakes helped the panic subside. Did no grading. Went to Goodwill, tried on blazers. Blazers do not look attractive on my body. Despaired of ever being able to look professional and adult. Realized that I need a haircut. Cannot afford to go to my regular haircut guy. Purchased a copy of Watchmen. Realized have no time to actually read Watchmen, b/c must work on research. Took class on tour of art museum. Everyone showed up on time, but they did not really pay attention or take notes. I don't know how I will represent the information presented today on the exam. Started to freak out about writing exams and quizzes. Came home. Bus was full. Apparently am suddenly the crazy lady who smiles and talks to strangers' babies. Baby did not smile back. Am possibly quite monstrous and scary to babies. Had to sit on sideways facing seat on bus. Subsequently felt carsick. No interesting mail or email. Am here alone, except for cats. Have promised to prepare dinner, have no energy for making dinner. Panic has returned, full blast. May possibly throw up or cry. Joyous.

  1. I think looking professional is over-rated. (see for example Blythe's post on hoodies). I am at a conference to which I brought a tie, only to leave it in my suitcase for the duration. I think everyone who looked more professional than me did so not by their dress, but by their age, baldness or carriage. Since I would prefer avoid the first two, I will settle for looking like a perpetual student.

  2. sigh. I think it's a little different in the humanities, though. T-shirts, sweaters, tennis shoes and jeans are ok for teaching (although most of my colleagues wear fancier clothes than that on a daily basis), but to stand in front of a group of people at a conference (even to moderate) you had better look a bit snazzy. and, for the record, you and Blythe both manage to look more put-together and classy than I do on any given day. Maybe because I'm too cheap to buy things that aren't on the clearance rack? Or go to the hairdresser on something that resembles a regular basis? frugality, thy name is frump.

  3. Hey Regina,
I´ve been thinking about this and I think you are right. Especially for women who want to be taken seriously in their field. Unfortunately. So here´s my two cents. Go to a store with a good petites department and a tailoring service and get two nice, classic jackets that DO look good, even if they aren´t blazers, per se. Then, try to find a variety of bottoms that go with them, either at places like Anne Taylor Loft (petites and not too expensive, as far as these things go), or Macys etc. Then, buy yourself some fun, colorful tank tops, shells blouses as you find them to make the outfits more versatile. Plus, two good pairs of shoes (which we both probably already own) and some accessories and you´ve got individual pieces you can wear with jeans, etc. for more casual, and combinations that look more dressed up but not frumpy. It´s time consuming, it´s not the cheapest clothes we´ll ever buy, but it certainly helps in the frump department. It took my mother taking me shopping to help me find stuff, but my mom is oh so much more fashionable than I. Plus, I don´t feel like I look too young or too old, and I can work a little of my own style into it. E.g. most of my jackets are corderoy, and my slacks are neat plaids or stripes. etc.
    Hope that helps.
    miss you.

  4. I picked up a copy of the Watchmen this weekend as well. I have this annoying habit of once picking up a book, I don't put it down, which explains why I rarely pick them up to begin with. Thus, I've finished it.

  5. Me + clearance rank = true love. I like Ben's philosophy (so much that I passed it on to my brothers): browse sale racks often, buy infrequently and only when item is under $15. (That bound changes with the item, i.e. don't buy $15 underwear, do buy $15 pants.) For us ladies, that bound can be restrictive. I'm ok with buying really great pants and sweaters at $20, but only when they ARE REALLY GREAT. Also, if you are looking for petite sizes, check out Banana Republic's sale rack for petites. (I know that BR is SUPER pricey, but when their special sizes go on sale, they go on sale big-time. It's great.)

  6. Men wonder why women like to go shopping so much. It's because when we find that really great buy, it feels awesome. I usually go straight for the clearance rack when I'm in a store.
